Question: I have scoliosis and recently noticed that one of my legs seems to be getting shorter than the other. Are these two things related, and what should I do?
Dr. Hibberd's answer:
Scoliosis is a curvature of the spine, and most often involves the middle and lower back. As this curve progresses, it is not unusual for people with the condition to notice that one leg appears to be shorter than the other, and that may affect your gait.
Have your personal physician assess you, and refer you to an orthopedic spine surgeon for evaluation. Not all scoliosis is treated with surgery, and it may be other options — including a night-time or full time brace — may work for you, if surgery is not a reasonable option.
