Can Saunas Help Me Sweat Out Toxins?

By    |   Monday, 16 March 2015 10:21 AM EDT

Question: My husband uses the sauna at his gym several times a week to “sweat out the toxins,” as he says. Is there any truth to that?

Dr. Hibberd's answer:

There is no truth to the idea that saunas allow the body to sweat out toxins. A sauna will dehydrate you, and can raise your blood pressure and heart rate (which in small doses can have cardiovascular benefits). But sweating in a sauna has no detoxifying effects on our bodies.

Natural detoxifications of our bodies is accomplished by our kidneys (by excretion) and by our liver (with activation of enzymes that breakdown chemicals) — enabling de-activation and excretion of drugs and toxic substances.
