Question: What’s the best way to control rosacea?
Dr. Hibberd's answer:
Resistant rosacea is best managed by eating a healthy diet, reduction of sun exposure, and the use of several preparations obtainable by prescription. Some cases in women are amenable to hormone manipulation, so take note of any changes before or during or after menses and report this to your physician. Some birth control pills are better than others in this regard, so consult your physician for guidance here.
Remember, this is not acne, and the use of acne medication combinations may actually worsen this condition.
An oral low-dose tetracycline and a topical antibiotic (Metronidazole) for daily use usually gives excellent results when cosmetics alone have been unsatisfactory.
Many patients with rosacea have sensitivity to sun, hot drinks, spices, tobacco, tea, coffee, caffeine, and alcohol. Appropriate sunscreen use and avoidance of known dietary triggers and tobacco may help reduce flare-ups.
Skin peels are useful for some with severe redness. Laser skin treatments can also be effective. But resurfacing treatments are best performed under the direct supervision of a dermatologist.
