Should I Eliminate Red Meat From My Diet?

By    |   Monday, 05 August 2013 09:56 AM EDT

Question: I love hamburgers, but always read about the dangers of red meat. Is having a burger once or twice a week really a big deal?

Dr. Hibberd's answer:

Red meat twice a week is not such a bad deal, especially if you use lean cuts for your hamburger. Hamburgers available at fast food stores are usually full of little meat, but have lots of salt, fat, and filler. These are all bad for our health.

Check the nutritional labeling before ordering hamburgers when eating out. Food eaten outside our homes should be scrutinized for nutritional balance, as well as fat and sodium content. Try to consume a low-fat, lower-sodium diet, and be sure to know your fasting cholesterol levels — including your total number, LDL, HDL, and triglyceride values
