Question: I have been diagnosed with an aggressive prostate cancer (with Gleason 6 cancer cells at two places out of 12 areas biopsied). I also have an enlarged prostate gland which causes me to urinate many times during the day and at night. Is surgery the best option for me?
Dr. Hibberd's answer:
Aggressive radical prostate surgery is not always the most appropriate treatment for prostate cancer. The decision about which type of treatment you should have depends on your age, risk factors, co-existing diseases, and your life expectancy.
You need to discuss your options with your urologist and your primary care physician. Options for you may involve radioactive seed implantation, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and perhaps surgery. You can also ask your primary physician for a referral to an oncologist to help you sift through the best options for successful treatment for you.
