Question: I have peeling nails and nails that split right up the center. What causes this and what can I do about it?
Dr. Hibberd's answer:
Peeling nails are usually caused by trauma, especially from the adhesives in artificial nails. Picking at cuticles sometimes causes traumatic nail effects.
If you use nail preparations, stop them immediately and let the nail grow out normally. If new normal growth is not seen, see a dermatologist.
There are rare disorders that are associated with abnormal nail growth, so if after stopping the nail preps and adhesives don't solve the problem, see your doctor for an exam and possible referral to a specialist.
