How is Parkinson's Diagnosed?

By    |   Monday, 11 August 2014 09:56 AM EDT

Question: Can you tell me if there is a definitive test for Parkinson’s disease? Sometimes my hands shake and I can’t seem to stop it.

Dr. Hibberd's answer:

There is no blood test for Parkinson’s (yet). The diagnosis remains a clinical one based on assessments a doctor can make during an evaluation, which can sometimes lead to MRI scans of the brain.  There are neuropsychological tests available that a neuropsychologist can perform that can be helpful in some cases.

The good news is that therapies are improving, by leaps and bounds, that that experimental stem cell treatments appear promising.

If you think you have Parkinson’s, you should see your doctor for review and if you have additional questions you should ask for a referral to a neurologist.
