What's the Best Treatment for Overactive Thyroid?

By    |   Thursday, 26 December 2013 10:07 AM EST

Question: My mother's thyroid test result came in yesterday and it was 14.2! What does she need to do?

Dr. Hibberd's answer:

Her thyroid hormone level is elevated enough to seek immediate physician consultation. Her doctor will evaluate her for hyperthyroidism and initiate a treatment plan to gain control of her thyroid.

If she is taking thyroid hormone, her dose will be reduced. If she has not had prior thyroid disease, she will likely be started on a beta-blocker medication, while she is evaluated by repeat blood testing.

She may be placed on an anti-thyroid medication or offered an ablative radioactive iodine drink after her lab findings are confirmed. She should NOT ignore this test reading, whether or not she has symptoms or complaints at present.
