What's Causing My Night Sweats?

By    |   Tuesday, 08 April 2014 05:11 PM EDT

Question: I have terrible night sweats, and wake up at least once a week drenched. My doctor has ruled out heart disease and thyroid problems. Could it just be anxiety or something else?

Dr. Hibberd's answer:

Yes, it definitely could be either or both. It can be gender-specific, related to menopause or other conditions. It is difficult to tell, by what little information you have provided, whether this is a major or minor condition, or whether it could evolve into a life-threatening situation.

You should ask your medical doctor what other evaluations or management are advised, or seek another doctor's opinion.

Night sweats can have many causes, but you must seek a doctor's diagnosis to be sure.
