Should I Take Niacin for Cholesterol?

By    |   Thursday, 12 February 2015 11:41 AM EST

Question: I am taking a niacin supplement along with a baby aspirin. Is this a safe combo?

Dr. Hibberd's answer:

You should get your doctor's permission to stop the niacin and review other options to replace it, probably with a statin.

Current prevention guidelines now recommend against niacin because of potential side effects (including myopathy, drug-drug interactions, negative glucose tolerance). We generally emphasize dietary management, exercise, correction of underlying cardiovascular risk factors, statin use, and/or fish oil therapy as primary strategies to reduce cardiovascular disease risks.
