Question: What can I do for my neuropathy pain? I am obese and have a hard time trying to lose weight. What can you suggest for me?
Dr. Hibberd's answer:
There are many causes of neuropathy pain. Usually the underlying disorder (such as diabetes or a vascular condition) needs aggressive management to limit nerve damage. There are many drugs used to relieve the pain of neuropathy, including tricyclic drugs such as Elavil in low doses or anti-seizure medications such as Neurontin and Lyrica.
Obesity in combination with neuropathy suggests that underlying disorders may be present. You should see your physician for a comprehensive neuropathy evaluation and medical review to be sure you do not have diabetes, a thyroid disorder, cancer, or another unrecognized medical condition that is causing your neuropathy.
