Are Nighttime Naps Healthy?

By    |   Monday, 23 February 2015 10:17 AM EST

Question: My husband takes a nap almost every night when he comes home from work (about 60 minutes, usually after 5 p.m.) Is that an unhealthy habit? He’s a pretty good sleeper at night.

Dr. Hibberd's answer:

As long as the after work nap does not adversely affect his night time sleep quality and duration, you are probably not dealing with an unhealthy habit.

It is a little unusual for our society, but in other countries — such as in Spain — an afternoon siesta is more usual, and has been proposed to have anti-aging effects.

All this aside, your husband should be sure to go for a check-up with his doctor just to be sure that his fatigue and need for naps is not related to an underlying disorder such as heart disease, diabetes, or a kidney problem.
