Question: I take Warfarin (3 milligrams, three times a day) and also Gabapentin (600 mg, three times a day). Is it OK to be taking so much medicine?
Dr. Hibberd's answer:
Usually, daily doses of the blood thinner Warfarin (Coumadin) are 3 to 5 milligrams — taken in a single dose. Nine mg of Warfarin is a high dose to be taking long term. Multiple daily doses provide no advantage over a single daily dose.
My concern is that the Coumadin is a once-a-day drug, and it is highly unusual to have to take it three times, a day unless an error was made by your doctor or pharmacist. It is best that you consult your physician to discuss your Coumadin use and what daily dose you are supposed to be using.
Gabapentin is a nerve signal modulating agent used for neuropathy or seizure control, and is often used for pain. The doses of Gabapentin you are taking are typical and are much less likely to be problematic. Regular checks are recommended for patients on Coumadin.
