Can BP be Too Low?

Tuesday, 22 May 2012 03:34 PM EDT

Question: Is there such a thing as too low blood pressure? Mine sometimes is as low as 90/60.

Dr. Hibberd's answer:
Low blood pressure, also called hypotension, for many people, can cause symptoms of dizziness and fainting. In severe cases, low blood pressure can be life-threatening. 90/60mmHg is considered low, and causes can range from dehydration to serious medical or surgical disorders.
Low blood pressure is treatable, but it's important to find out what's causing your condition so that it can be properly treated. Athletes and people who exercise regularly tend to have lower blood pressure and a slower heart rate than do people who are not as fit.
Make a note if you have any symptoms such as lightheadedness, blurred vision, fainting, or is the low pressure present on suddenly standing up, or after eating. Are you taking any medications that could be causing the low blood pressure? Visit your doctor if you have symptoms of hypotension.
