Question: I am having some strange pains in my legs and feet. My right thigh often becomes numb when I'm standing, but not so much when sitting or lying? I also get numbness and cramping in my feet. Could it be sciatica, or a circulation problem?
Dr. Hibberd's answer:
One-sided leg, thigh, and foot pain with numbness that comes on when you’re standing, but not sitting or lying down, must be evaluated without delay. It could be from sciatica (sciatic nerve irritation), circulation problems, spinal stenosis, or even a spinal tumor.
Similarly, other tumors of the pelvic and back area can produce these same complaints. So can degenerative disc disease or primary nerve disorder. You should see your primary care physician or a specialist for an evaluation of these complaints.
It’s always better to seek advice and management early, when your condition is manageable and likely curable with little effort. Delays in evaluation are unwise and could leave you with a potentially permanent lower limb disability that may not be as correctable later on.
