How Long Will My Knee Surgery Recovery Take?

By    |   Thursday, 30 October 2014 04:18 PM EDT

Question: I had knee surgery a year ago (meniscus tear), and still have swelling and pain in my knee, particularly after I play golf or exercise. Will this eventually go away? My orthopedic doctor says it's normal to have pain and swelling for a long time, even after surgery.

Dr. Hibberd's answer:

Meniscus repair surgery results are highly variable. Usually the benefits are seen within 3 months, but recurring symptoms that last 12 months suggest some other condition may co-exist here.

I would consider getting a second orthopedic opinion, and the merits of a repeat MRI of your knee to see what’s happening. If metallic clips were used in your knee surgery, you will need to obtain clearance to see if an MRI can be safely done.
