Question: I had knee surgery (meniscus tear) last year and have now noticed I'm getting pain in my other knee. Is there anything I can do to avoid having a second surgery? I'm pretty active (in my mid-50s, play golf, and exercise every other day or so).
Dr. Hibberd's answer:
Meniscal injury and tears unfortunately do not heal well by themselves. The occurrence of pain on the opposite side does not necessarily mean the cause is meniscal (from damage to the cartilage disc that is cushioning the bones on the knee joint) or that it requires surgery.
Usually an MRI will identify the cause of the pain, and it and sounds like it's time for one of your doctors to check it out.
