Question: I recently had a kidney stone and it was very painful. Is there anything I can do to keep from having another one?
Dr. Hibberd's answer:
Prevention of recurrent kidney stones is possible and very important to prevent kidney damage. The best prevention is to be sure to hydrate yourself generously, especially if you plan any air travel. Plain water is fine. Avoid soft drink use and consult a dietitian to see if some elements of your diet may contribute to stone formation.
Some additives are ill advised and some vitamins may actually increase stone formation. For example , high-dose vitamin C actually may cause stones in those at risk. Remember that vitamins and supplements act like drugs in the body, so be sure to clear them with your doctor if you have a tendency to form kidney stones.
Consider having an ultrasound of your kidneys to evaluate for retained stones, and if retained stones are evident, decide with your urologist whether ultrasound directed dissolution — called lithotripsy — is worthwhile to prevent them from enlarging to cause obstructions or complications.
