How Can I Treat My Itchy Skin?

Thursday, 24 January 2013 09:41 AM EST

Question: I have the most awful case of lichen planus on my lower legs. It is very itchy and the lesions are horrible. My dermatologist says it may be caused by my blood pressure medication. I have switched drugs and it has gotten better, but it hasn’t gone away. Do you have any suggestions?

Dr. Hibberd’s answer:

Lichen planus is a chronic nonmalignant skin condition. It can be triggered by drugs, irritants, and some diseases. Its cause is unknown. It sounds like your dermatologist was correct so far. Now is a good time to seek recommendations on treatment options.

Often a low-potency steroid cream is used for mild cases, but others may require oral medication. A skin biopsy may be a good idea. Treatment is best recommended by your personal physician or dermatologist who can adjust the dose according to your specific condition, needs, and response.
