Question: I have been diagnosed with chronic folliculitis mainly on my scalp and also my chest. It is very itchy, unsightly and uncomfortable. What do you think is the best treatment for this? I’m a man in my 60s.
Dr. Hibberd’s answer:
Sometimes patients diagnosed with folliculitis actually have psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis or even a contact dermatitis. I’d ask for a dermatology consultation. While awaiting your consultation, ask your doctor if he or she thinks you should try a topical antifungal shampoo containing a low level of corticosteroid twice a day. You might also try a tar-based shampoo and see if it makes a difference, until you can meet with a dermatology specialist. In the meantime, discontinue all other topical treatments you are using and avoid using hair coloring products.
