Question: I am a 60-year-old female and I am dealing with hot flashes and night sweats on a daily basis. They’re just terrible. What can I do?
Dr. Hibberd’s answer:
Hot flashes with sweats are usually perimenopausal. A short-term trial of hormone therapy may be appropriate while a doctor evaluates your condition.
Other non-hormonal remedies such as clonidine can be used to control these symptoms until things settle over the next 12 months.
If hormone treatments don’t totally control these symptoms within several days, further evaluation for other causes should be undetaken. Night sweats can sometimes be caused by infections, such as tuberculosis, malignancies, hormone disorders, and autoimmune diseases.
