Question: How long does it take to recover from a pelvis operation? My husband had a plate fitted for his pelvis after he broke his hip in a car crash.

Plating for pelvic fracture and pinning or hip prosthesis for hip fracture usually enables immediate walking. The procedures repair the fracture site — with a plate or prosthesis — while the bone heals over the plated areas.

This can be painful, however, and include complications, such as blood clots. His recovery will involve intensive physical therapy for the first two to three weeks, often in a skilled care facility.

But within six weeks’ time, he should be comfortable, as long as he experiences no complications.
