Question: I had two heart stents put in and have been taking Plavix. I heard that taking Plavix to prevent blood clots can cause problems with other main organs. Is this true? Are there alternative drugs?
Dr. Hibberd's answer:
Plavix prevents blood clots, which can cause heart attacks and strokes and is also usually prescribed after stenting. Some people have genetic changes, or mutations, to a certain gene (CYP2C19) that affects the function of Plavix in preventing blood clots. Such persons may have a higher chance of a heart attack or stroke while on Plavix. A simple DNA test, by swabbing the inside of your cheek, can determine if you carry that gene. Aggrastat (tirofiban), Effient (prasugrel), and Integrilin (eptifibatide) are some of the other antiplatelet drugs that are available, and the best one can be prescribed by your physician.
