Question: I am a 73-year-old female, basically in good health for my age, but both my hands go numb at night. It started with a mild tingling in my fingers and proceeded to complete numbness. Any suggestions as to what might be causing this?
Dr. Hibberd's answer:
When both hands go numb at night, the causes can be any number of things. You could have carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) from osteoarthritis, hypothyroidism, arthritis, osteoporosis, an injury, or even a spinal cord tumor.
But you need to go to your physician for an immediate evaluation. Sometimes similar symptoms may be seen from abnormalities in the blood, infections, and hormonal disorders. But without a proper health assessment we can't be sure.
