Question: Is there anything my husband can do to stop hair loss? He uses Rogaine but I do not see improvement.
Dr. Hibberd’s answer:
Hair loss is always alarming. But despite years of research, we don’t have solutions for everyone who’s losing his hair. Baldness can be generalized or localized, drug-induced, genetic, or result from hypothyroidism or other metabolic disorders.
Treatment usually includes topical Rogaine twice daily. Proper scalp hygiene is essential and it’s important to avoid harsh chemicals, coloring, and permanent hair treatments that damage the hair itself. Some men with male-pattern baldness will respond well to a single daily low-dose oral medication called Finasteride. The response can be dramatic in some and less so in others.
Appropriate diet and stress management are always important, as well as treating any underlying endocrine disorders, such as hypothyroidism. For some men, hair weaving or expensive hair transplantation procedures are also an option.
