Is My 'Good' Cholesterol Level Too High?

By    |   Friday, 07 March 2014 09:58 AM EST

Question:  My total cholesterol is nearly 235, but my doctor says it's ok because my HDL "good" cholesterol is really high, which is why my total is so high. But can a person have too much "good" cholesterol?

Dr. Hibberd's answer:

You have nothing to worry about. The higher the HDL, the better. I must assume your HDL is over 100, and you are fortunate indeed, because HDL is protective and binds up the smaller LDL "bad"cholesterol that is so damaging to our cardiovascular health and circulation,  when allowed to accumulate.

I assume your triglycerides are also under the 150 target, as these are independent risks for advancing atherosclerosis, and are not cleared by the HDL.
