Question: Is there any downside to going gluten-free? I don't have celiac, but I find that bread and pasta upsets my stomach, so I'm thinking of trying gluten-free foods. What do you think?
Dr. Hibberd's answer:
There is no health downside to going gluten free.
As you probably know, patients with celiac disease cannot digest gluten, which causes an abnormal immune response that can damage their bowels. This creates cramps and loose stools, as well as more severe complications if not managed properly. These patients must follow a gluten free diet.
But there is also a small subset of people who have less severe gluten sensitivity. They may experience be isolated cramps, diarrhea, constipation, fatigue, muscle aches, anxiety, depression or mood disorders, They will only know if they follow a gluten-free diet a trial for at least eight weeks.
A gluten-free diet is difficult to adhere to, but this is now very popular, with newer gluten-free combinations available. Remember that most of us deal with gluten the same as any other nutrient, and that actual gluten sensitivity or intolerance is easily managed by using gluten-free foods.
