Dear Dr. Hibberd:
Is there a natural way to treat the symptoms of Gilberts Syndrome, especially fatigue, brain fog, and anxiety?
Answer:
Gilbert's Syndrome has no signs or symptoms that you as a patient will notice. It actually refers to a defect in the conjugation of bilirubin in the liver that allows mildly elevated levels of bilirubin that are noted on routine lab testing. If you have symptoms of brain fog and fatigue, perhaps some other condition may be present. I recommend you be further evaluated, as Gilbert's by itself is not a serious medical condition and is not expected to give you symptoms of fatigue, brain fog or anxiety. Elevated bilirubin levels elevated to a symptomatic level (yellow skin, itching, fatigue, lethargy, abdominal pain, agitation) are almost always related to other underlying conditions when seen in patients with pre-existing Gilbert's Syndrome.
