Question: Can acid reflux be caused by a thyroid problem?
Dr. Hibberd's answer:
Acid reflux refers to stomach acid making its way into the lower esophagus, and is sometimes referred to as GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease). It usually relates to physical gastric or esophageal disorders resulting in a faulty gastroesphageal sphincter — the muscle that closes off the stomach from the esophagus. But there is no direct relationship between GERD and thyroid hormone disorders.
Thyroid hormone controls metabolism rates, and helps regulate body temperature, body weight, heart rates and function, body fluid retention, and brain function.
That being said, hypothyroid can lead to overweight and obesity, that in turn can increase the incidence of GERD.
