Question: Recent lab work showed that my blood platelet count was low. I eat garlic a lot and I heard this can cause low platelets. Is this true?
Dr. Hibberd's answer:
A low platelet count is not likely caused by garlic in your diet. But it is probably best to stop the garlic and any other supplements that are non-prescribed until the cause of your low platelet level is determined and addressed by your doctor.
You should also avoid aspirin, ibuprofen and other over-the-counter non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents that are known to decrease platelet function. If follow-up tests of your platelet counts do not show an improvement, ask your doctor for a consultation with a hematologist.
This is also a good time to bring your doctor up to date with your medication and supplement use and concerns.
