Question: I’m a woman in my 40s who has long suffered from hirsutism (abnormal facial hair growth). Is there a natural way to stop this hair growth?
Dr. Hibberd’s answer:
Long-term hirsutism may be genetic or caused by a hormonal imbalance, such as too much testosterone. Are your menses normal or are they irregular? Do you have any other symptoms of masculinization, or do your relatives have similar issues? Are you of Mediterranean descent? The answers to these questions can all offer clues. It would be wise for you to be evaluated for polycystic ovary syndrome and other conditions associated with hirsutism. I recommend you see your doctor. Expect some blood tests and evaluation for endocrine disorders (diabetes, hypothyroidism), as well as an ultrasound of your ovaries to start. There is no natural way to stop unwanted facial hair growth unless there is a cause that can be treated, but we do have effective prescription medications that will help you. Time to see your doctor.
