Can Glasses Make My Eyes Weaker?

By    |   Friday, 22 November 2013 04:11 PM EST

Question: Since I got my first pair of reading glasses two years ago (at 46), I’ve noticed my eyesight has gotten worse. Is it possible my glasses are to blame?

Dr. Hibberd's answer:

Deteriorating eyesight is not caused by the use — or lack of use — of reading glasses. We normally become a little more far sighted in our 40s as a result of the aging of our lenses, and their ability to adjust to differing focal lengths. That can make reading glasses necessary for many of us.

This is an age when annual eye checks should be considered, not only for vision, but also for glaucoma, health disorders associated with retinopathy, and underlying problems with our visual pathways and retinas.
