Why Does Exertion Give Me Headaches?

By    |   Wednesday, 29 April 2015 10:31 AM EDT

Question: I have been getting sudden headaches whenever I exert myself (while I exercise, for instance), but it stops afterward. What may be causing it?

Dr. Hibberd's answer:

Headaches brought on by exercise should be evaluated by a medical professional. Although most headaches are caused by simple tension or migraines, it’s important to assess new symptoms that occur suddenly, are severe or recurrent, or occur with other neurologic complaints.

Most are evaluated with an MRI of the brain to be sure these symptoms are not associated with the presence of aneurism, tumor, or vascular malformations in the brain.
