Question: I am 70 years old and in good health, but have erectile dysfunction. I am overweight and have high blood pressure and high cholesterol and am wondering if losing weight will help me in the bedroom?
Dr. Hibberd's answer:
Yes! Not only will losing weight help with your ED, it will also significantly lower your risk of suffering a heart attack or stroke. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain by losing weight.
Get started after a visit to your personal physician. Weight control will help improve your blood pressure and that alone may have a positive impact on your ED. Be aware that some commonly used blood pressure meds do cause ED, even at low doses. Medications used for weight loss are often not worth the expense or side effects, especially with your co-existing risks, so I would recommend changing your lifestyle, eating a healthy diet, and getting your weight under control.
Your cholesterol can also be managed and improved by adopting a healthier lifestyle, and that may reduce your medication needs. Other options can be considered by your physician. For instance, you may want to ask your physician if a prescription ED pill or patch would be appropriate for you.
Often the presence of ED with your risk factors can lead to coronary artery disease or stroke, so be sure your doctor has screened you for these conditions.
