What's Causing My Itchy Skin?

By    |   Monday, 14 July 2014 05:01 PM EDT

Question: I itch all the time, all over my body. What should I ask my doctor to test for? It has been going on for months now.

Dr. Hibberd's answer:
Itching is called pruritus in medical lingo. Causes are from A to Z — including allergies, dry skin, hormone problems, changes tied to menopause, internal disorders, cancers, and eczema.
Since the problem has been happening for months, you should see a doctor, who can evaluate whether other symptoms — such as weight loss, appetite changes, or rashes that do not response to topical agents — can help identify the cause.
Your doctor can conduct targeted investigation and propose a treatment strategy. Most of the time, a cause can be identified without exhaustive testing.
