Question: I have borderline high blood sugar, which my doctor says makes me pre-diabetic. Should I be taking metformin or other diabetes drugs?
Dr. Hibberd’s answer:
You either have diabetes or you don't. If you are pre-diabetic, you should have your doctor determine if you have periods of hypoglycemia — the high blood sugar we see in pre-diabetics — when you are fasting or if your HBA1C levels are over 6.5.
If the former, no metformin is necessary. But if you have the latter — a high A1C level — metformin is probably a wise choice, if you have the option. Metformin helps your body manage insulin better and actually aids in weight management also, which is essential for proper Type 2 diabetes management
