Question: I take Pravastatin Sodium (10 milligrams) with CoQ10 (100 milligrams). I am training for a marathon and want to know, should I increase my intake of CoQ10?
Dr. Hibberd's answer:
Your muscle stress during a marathon will increased your levels of CPK — an enzyme found in the heart. CoQ10 is used to decrease muscle aches when on statins, and an increased dose to 200-300 milligrams of CoQ10 may make sense.
But you should consult your doctor and ask whether it might be better to change the way you are using Pravastatin or add more CoQ10 as a preventive treatment. I would also recommend that you ask about stopping your statin 24 hours before your marathon, and resume once you have recovered.
It is quite common for doctors to recommend holding statin doses before major surgery during times of illness or extreme stress with the interruptions usually being for no longer than five to 10 days. Perhaps this will be a well-timed drug holiday for you.
