Question: I am a 70 year old woman who suffers from COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease). I am thinking of trying acupuncture for this condition. Do you think it could help?
Dr. Hibberd's answer:
I say save your money. Could acupuncture for COPD help you deal with the stress of having COPD? Perhaps. But acupuncture will not treat your COPD directly or effect any remission. Acupuncture is not regarded as a standard treatment or palliative option for COPD, a common lung disease that can cause shortness of breath, coughing, and fatigue. This being said, there are studies suggesting that acupuncture, along with daily medication for three months may benefit selected patients with COPD who have maximized their medical regimens. Study participants reported they were able to walk longer without becoming breathless, compared to those who did not get the treatment. If you do try acupuncture, make sure you see an experienced acupuncturist, and take your regular medications too.
