Question: I have cold hands and feet every morning when I wake up and it persists throughout the day. But I'm extremely overweight so this insulation does nothing! Could this be related to hypothyroidism? Is it a vitamin deficiency?
Dr. Hibberd's answer:
Cool hand and feet usually relates to circulation, immune disorders, spasms, and not to hypothyroidism, although an underactive thyroid can cause weight gain. So get a TSH blood test, and quit guessing. You can also ask your doctor for an ankle brachial index screening and an assessment of your arteries and veins by ultrasound screening. You should also be assessed for any vascular problems.
Vitamin deficiency is usually not the cause of this. Sometimes it can be part of a nervous system condition or related to Raynaud's phenomenon. It is also often seen with various autoimmune or rheumatic disorders affecting joints and joint tissue structures. In any event, a physician examination will get to the bottom of the problem and a way to manage it.
