Question: I drink a lot of coffee and sometimes notice my heart races late in the afternoon. Could the two things be related?
Dr. Hibberd's answer:
Yes. Coffee contains caffeine, a stimulant that will cause rapid heart rates in those who are sensitive to it. So while caffeine may not be the reason you have a rapid heart rate, it is no doubt is an aggravating factor.
I would recommend seeking a consultation with your physician to be sure these rapid-beating spells are not a sign of a more ominous condition or disorder of the heart that is warning you before a more serious event occurs. A holter or event monitor may be needed after your heart and blood are screened for potential problems.
A stress test is not usually needed for unless you have increased risks for ischemic heart disease, or are planning an aggressive exercise program or marathon event.
