Can Coffee Make My Heart Race?

By    |   Friday, 01 August 2014 10:07 AM EDT

Question: I drink a lot of coffee and energy drinks to stay alert on my job, but I notice sometimes my heart races. Could it be the caffeine?

Dr. Hibberd's answer:

Yes. Caffeine is a stimulant. Once you have reached the point where heart racing occurs, you really need to see your physician for an EKG and evaluation to be sure these rapid beats are not life threatening or early indicators of heart disease.

Using stimulants to stay awake is a bad idea. I would recommend stopping the energy drinks now, and gradually lowering your coffee consumption over the next two weeks. If your symptoms persist, you may need further evaluation with a holter or event monitor.

Your body is warning you now. Either change your ways or you may be in for a nasty surprise.
