Question: I'm 5-foot-2 and weigh 115 pounds, my total cholesterol is 184, my triglycerides are 170, my HDL is 48 and my LDL is 102. Are my cholesterol levels good or bad?
Dr. Hibberd's answer:
You look great to me. Your weight is well proportioned for your height. Your LDL (“bad” cholesterol) is good. A normal LDL is less than 130 and ideally around 100, and yours is 102. HDL (protective “good” cholesterol) is best to be close to 60 but an HDL of 48 is not giving you much protection, so this perhaps can be worked on. But your level is not alarming,
A total cholesterol of 184 is fine, and you should aim to bring down your triglycerides to under 150 (eating more vegetables and whole grains and less sugary high-carb foods can help).
But all in all, your levels are pretty good. You might also ask your doctor about adding fish oil or niacin to improve your triglycerides and HDL level.
