Can I Lower My Cholesterol By Dieting?

By    |   Friday, 25 October 2013 09:29 AM EDT

Question: What diet do you recommend to lower cholesterol? What herbal vitamins/and or herbals teas do you suggest? I do not believe in taking medicines.

Dr. Hibberd's answer:

Low-fat, high-fiber diets can help manage your cholesterol levels. Herbal teas have no significant effect.

Cholesterol management has been revolutionized by the use of statin medications that reduce the production of cholesterol in the liver. Disability and complications can occur when available medications are disregarded or not considered. I've been at this for more than 30 years, and have seen massive damage when someone tries to tough it out without taking medicine for diseases they may know little about.

So try to understand that some people need medications to live a normal life, or at least a life free of complications from disease. Just ask someone with diabetes or seizure disorder how they feel about medications: The answer just may be that they are life saving.

I feel the same way about appropriate use of cholesterol reducing agents: They are truly life sustaining for some people unfortunate enough to have vascular disease, and are useless in those without health risks associated with vascular disease. I also do not believe in taking unnecessary medications, but I discourage nonsensical use of untested remedies.
