Question: My son has had three seizures while sleeping. A nurse mentioned oxygen deprivation as a possible cause, but he does not snore. Could this be sleep apnea?
Dr. Hibberd’s answer:
Nocturnal seizure activity is a serious matter that requires a consultation with a neurologist.
It’s hard to identify a cause from your brief description, but you should have him evaluated now to be sure that it is not due to a cardiac, pulmonary, infectious, toxic, or medication issue.
Without more information, I can’t tell if these are true seizures or pseudo-seizures. But sleep apnea is rarely a cause of seizure activity.
