Can I Take Painkillers With Blood Thinners?

Friday, 13 December 2013 10:04 AM EST

Question: I am on blood thinners. Is it OK to also take a painkiller for teeth pain?

Dr. Hibberd's answer:

Blood thinner use will not be affected by narcotic pain meds used for occasional dental pain. But the regular use of ibuprofen, aspirin, or naproxen should be avoided when on blood thinners because they can cause increased negative reactions.

That said, one or two doses will not have a significant effect on most patients, but I still counsel against their use unless prescribed intentionally by their primary physician to reduce the risk of adverse interaction.
