Why Does My Blood Sugar Rise After Eating?

Monday, 24 March 2014 09:44 AM EDT

Question: I have pre-diabetes and, when fasting, my blood sugar is usually in the range of 80 to 120 mg/dL. But after meal, the measurements go much higher — into the 140s. Is that normal? Should I be worried?

Dr. Hibberd's answer:

A normal fasting glucose is under 110. A fasting glucose of over 126 usually means you have diabetes. But glucose readings in the 140s after eating are totally normal, and should be no cause for alarm.

Pre-diabetes is best monitored with periodic HbA1C measurements to be sure you remain in a non-diabetic range. HbA1C readings reflect the average glucose levels over a 3-month period.
