Question: I have a pretty big beer belly, but my doctor says sit-ups won't help me. Is there anything I can do to reduce my belly fat?
Dr. Hibberd's answer:
Unfortunately, beer bellies are not simply a result of poor abdominal musculature tone. As a result, sit-ups are not the answer. You need an overall aerobic exercise program to lose weight, which will reduce your belly fat.
You should check with your doctor to be sure you are healthy enough to begin a new fitness program, then visit your local health club, pool, YMCA or gym for a fitness evaluation with a trainer who can work with you to build a program to reduce your overall weight, and your belly fat.
Swimming — alternating between freestyle, backstroke, and breast stroke — with a goal of 30 minutes a day can be an effective, low-impact way to reduce weight. And don't forget to make sure you are eating a healthy diet and avoiding excess alcohol (no more than two drinks daily).
