What's Causing My Back, Neck Pain?

By    |   Monday, 19 May 2014 09:51 AM EDT

Question: I have been having serious back and waist pain for two weeks now that just came out of nowhere. I have never had back problems before (I am 53). What could be causing it?

Dr. Hibberd's answer:

Lower back and waist pain for two weeks without any obvious cause should be evaluated by your physician. A minor strain should be improving by now, and I would be worried that you continuing pain may be due to a potential fracture, malignancy, and other underlying disorders such as disc disease or even kidney stones or kidney failure.

Statistically, most symptoms such as yours relate to poor posture and poor conditioning, but you owe it to yourself to get this properly checked out now. Kidney failure can become rapidly life-threatening, so see your doctor tomorrow.
