Can You Outgrow Asthma, Allergies?

By    |   Monday, 16 June 2014 09:56 AM EDT

Question: I have a friend who swears that he outgrew his childhood asthma and allergies. Is this really possible?

Dr. Hibberd's answer:

Yes. It is quite common for childhood asthma and allergies to improve as children grow into adulthood. This is believed to result from the formation of blocking antibodies that form as continued exposure to allergens often produces.

This is actually the basis behind childhood immunotherapy shots for allergies and asthma. Not all childhood asthma leads to adult asthma. The susceptibility to wheezing will usually remain, but the symptoms often have improved in severity and frequency as adulthood proceeds.

Some childhood asthma worsens, so we cannot always be sure, and it is best to optimize treatment of asthma using inhalers as long as asthma is evident.
