Sinusitis and Secondhand Smoke

Monday, 09 January 2012 09:25 AM EST

Question: I’m a woman of 61 who has severe sinus problems. Could cigarette smoke be a factor? I do not smoke, but I live around people who do, and I get a lot of secondhand smoke.

Dr. Hibberd's Answer:
Sinusitis can be exacerbated by smoke, so try to avoid being around smokers. You can politely request that they go outdoors instead of smoking in your presence, especially if you are in a room or house.
